RIY: Record It Yourself Curriculum in Any Language

How to Use RIY Video Curriculum curriculum (Created by Christine Lewis & Alyssa Johnson)

“Wait, all this content is in English?!?” Yes, because the idea is YOU will take the script from each video and “dub” it into another language, the language you want to teach/learn with your students.  The transcripts of each video are available for free. You (if you’re a bilingual parent) or a Language Mama (Someone you know who fluently speaks the target language) will translate the transcript and record voice reading the translation in time to the video. Lay the voice recording over the video, and you’re set! Yes, this is a multi-step process but if you do it, you may be able to help the next family who wants to learn the same language go far!

We’ve created three terms so far. “Term” refers to a unit of content which can be spread over anywhere between three weeks to three months, depending on your children’s age/development stage.

Format: Each Term is made of the same building blocks:

  • Story (a popular children’s book + vocab from book)
  • Song (a common simple song + vocab from song)
  • Reveal (common real world objects revealed in video + vocab from video)
  • Scripts (phrases/interactions for use in home, with strangers, and for playing with other kids)
  • Show & Tell (learning about a new aspect of culture or customs from your language)

Each week: You’ll use the videos from each block to give language exposure to your kids daily (we recommend 10-15 min daily for 6 and under. Older kids will be able to pay attention longer).  Every day: Show one of the videos, followed with part of a scaffolding video (Scaffolding videos provide repetition of the sounds and reinforcement of vocab). Other easy activities and games can be added to the video to bring playfulness and fun into the lesson. By the end of the each term, your kids will have a solid grasp of  language elements included in term and familiarity with more than 100 new vocab words.
